Instruction content/structure

Traditional and up-to-date concepts and theories of HRM will be introduced, discussed and applied to realistic situations in regional SMEs.

The HRM learning module contains the following main chapters:

1 Introduction to HRM and specific aspects of SMEs

2 Strategic resourcing and workforce planning for SMEs

3 Recruitment and Selection for SMEs

4 Employee Turnover and Retention Management for SMEs

5 Performance management

6 Pay and Reward Systems for SMEs

7 Employee Ownership for SMEs

Qualification objectives

Learning objectives are the development, consolidation and practical application of HRM competencies. In the module, the students acquire both core and cross-disciplinary competencies, in particular methodical competencies (e.g. project and team work, digital competencies, presentation skills), social competencies (e.g. communicating with partner SMEs, capacity to reflect, conflict management), language and intercultural competencies as well as practical entrepreneurial experience (application of HR concepts in enterprises). By combining the course theoretical contents and practical projects with regional SMEs and local public institutions, the students’ employability will be increased. The integrated online learning phases require and enable virtual mobility of students and thus support open and flexible learning.

Literature

Basic literature :

Foot, M./ Hook, C. /Jenkins, A. (2016): Introducing Human Resource Management, 7th Edition: Pearson    (Very clearly structured textbook for students with little experience in English HRM terms and processes)

Beardwell, J./Thompson; A. (2017): Human Resource Management: A contemporary Approach, 8th edition: Pearson    (This book contains all important HR processes and many small case studies that we can use in our HR course - phase 1. So students can learn to deal with case studies before ISP.)

Armstrong, M./Taylor, S.: Armstrong’s Handbook of Human Resource Management Practices, 13th edition 2014,

Wapshott, R. /Mallett, O. (2016) Managing Human Resources in Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises.  Abingdon and New York: Routledge. (Suggestion from UK)

Articles on selected HR topics in SMEs (all of you have separate lists sent by UK)

Regional literature and materials (country-specific)

Saunders, M./Lewis,P./Thornhill, A. (2016): Research Methods for Business Students, 7th edition, Pearson.  (This book can help to prepare students for academic working methods (assignment), such as searching and citing literature, developing questionnaires for conducting interviews in SMEs, using case studies in a learning environment - during phase 1 and ISP - etc.)
