Instruction content/structure

The aim of this course is to equip students with the knowledge required to work as process engineers.  Relevant case studies are introduced in the lecture to enhance student learning.  The course is designed to provide study links between the theories discussed in lectures and tutorial/ practical exercises and lab classes.  This course will equip students with the ability to analyse complex engineering systems and simplify the system under investigations by applying relevant assumptions.  This course will also provide insights into the latest technology developments in the field of power and process engineering.  Students have to provide evidence of their understanding of the thermodynamic subject, heat transfer and process operations by engaging in technical discussions and presentations on individual and group level.  They also have to show their ability to apply fundamental concepts to solve open ended problems/ questions.

The basics chemical engineering concepts are covered in this module. Topics include:

  1. Separation and mixing process of solids and liquids,
  2. Heat and mass transfer,
  3. Reactor engineering concepts
  4. Thermodynamics.

The example calculations in class consolidate the understanding of the subject areas covered. In the practical/ laboratory, the knowledge to key concepts is consolidated.

Qualification objectives

Chemical engineering process operations and concepts are covered in this module. The module introduces students also to relevant calculations and modelling approaches in chemical engineering. The key concepts will be conveyed by interactive involvement of students in problem based learning activities and an open ended challenge.
