Radioactivity: nuclear structure; radioactive decay; modes of radioactive decay; ionizing radiation; interaction of ionizing radiation with matter; detection and measurement of ionizing radiation; statistics; environmental radiation 

Radiation protection: biological effects of ionizing radiation; dose quantities; radiation dosimetry; legislation in radiation protection; occupational radiation exposure; practical radiation protection; shielding against ionizing radiation 

Practicals: measurement of α-, β-, γ-radiation; α-, β-, γ-spectroscopy; radon gas concentration; dosimetry; calculations in radiation protection

Qualification objectives

The students … 

  • know the different kinds of radioactive radiations and how to measure them 
  • have practical experience in the handling of radioactive sources 
  • can consider and apply important aspects of the legislation in radiation protection 
  • know how to protect against ionizing radiation 
  • have experience in dosimetry and can estimate the radiation exposure
