I. Statistical methods for Social Sciences (Frédéric Bedel) 10 h TD

1. Statistical data (Collection, presentation, calculating the parameters)

2. Estimators (Estimating the usual parameters, confidence intervals)

3. Hypothesis testing (The different types of error, the chi-squared test)

4. Linear regression

5. Applied methods: Excel spreadsheet, Access data base software

II. An introduction to quantitative research methodology (Johannes Dahm) 20 h TD

1. Introduction: empirical research in the humanities and social sciences: quantitative and qualitative approaches (epistemology, position, hypotheses and theories).

2. Quantitative methodology: data collection based on research question (theoretical bases, hypotheses, approaches, scales, index...).

3. Quantitative research methodology: quality criteria, types of investigation, samples.

4. Quantitative methodology: standardized investigations, construction of a questionnaire.

5. Quantitative measures: statistics (descriptive and inferential).

6. Preparation of a questionnaire: carrying out a survey, design, type of questionnaire.

7. Preparation of a questionnaire: types of questions, objectives, order of questions, effects.

8. State of the research: presentation of questionnaires, ideas, discussion, adaptations.

9. From collection to exploitation of data:  documentation, databases, assessment.

10. Presentation of surveys: construction, design, database, analysis, validity.

III. Management and monitoring of European Funds (Anne-Lise Bonnec) 15 h TD

1. The context in 2014-2020 and which authorities to contact;

2. The different funds and programmes – operational programmes and application procedures;

3. The life cycle of a European funding project; preparing submission of  the application (help available for the project initiator and financial planning) financial and technical evaluation of the details of the project, scheduling,  grant agreement , payment, control and accountability;

4. Example of a regional cooperation programme ( concept of project leader and partnerships);

5. Practical case ; creating an application for project funding.

Qualifikationsziele

I. Statistical methods for Social Sciences (Frédéric Bedel) 10 h TD

The aim of this class is to enable students to use the main statistical tools used in social sciences along with spreadsheets and data base software.

II. An introduction to quantitative research methodology (Johannes Dahm) 20 h TD

The objective of this class is to raise awareness of quantitative research methodology among students. Processing methodological and theoretical basis of empirical research. During the semester, students will carry out their own survey (questionnaires).Marking will be based on presentation of ongoing research and dossier.

III. Management and monitoring of European Funds (Anne-Lise Bonnec) 15 h TD

The objective of this class is to raise understanding of the different approaches to regional and national financing before preparing an application for funding.
