Lehrinhalte/Gliederung

The aim of this module is to provide a comprehensive coverage of fundamentals of instrumentation systems based on LabVIEW concepts. The focus of the module is the acquisition of data and the controlling of instrumentation systems.

Students will gain foundational knowledge of system modelling, design, analysis and implementation of control algorithms. In addition, students will be familiarised with sensors and data acquisition concepts commonly used in multidisciplinary engineering applications. Using case studies, students apply their gained knowledge working on different technical issues.

Topics covered:

  • Elements of a process control system (block diagrams)
  • Open and closed loop systems (principles and comparison of open and closed loop control)
  • Parameters used to define a transducer’s performance and how these are used to specify and select a transducer for a given application
  • Measuring process parameters such as flow, temperature, pressure, level, density, viscosity, composition (i.e. PI controller feedforward control, with two-point controller, three-point controller (split range), override control, via motorised valve with position feedback)
  • Methods whereby common physical variables are converted into electrical signals and subsequently interfaced to computer-based systems. Signal conditioning, signal transmission (telemetry)
Qualifikationsziele

Students gain background knowledge to design and set up measurement and control systems for technical processes and are equipped with a sound knowledge of data acquisition approaches. The practical work helps students to develop skills in characterising transducers and measurement systems and in converting physical variables into electrical signals which are then interfaced into computer systems for the purpose of control and/or data logging.
