Qualification objectives

The aim of the module Advanced Research Methods for Business Students is to provide an overview of research methods which will assist students in undertaking research projects within the business and management field and contribute to the existing body of knowledge. It covers the entire research process beginning with the formulation of a research proposal to the dissemination of results.

The module provides a theoretical and critical understanding of the qualitative and quantitative as well as mixed methods research paradigms. It introduces the required methodological skills and analytic techniques to formulate precise research questions, to decide on the appropriateness of different data collection methods, to develop a valid and reliable approach to both, quantitative and qualitative research design, data collection and data analysis and to present this in a clear, concise and logical manner.

The module will furthermore familiarize the students with a set of modern theories, such as e.g. systems theory, social network theory, etc., that provide a lens for the analysis of data and discussion of results. The applicability of such theoretical lenses will be underlined through the discussion and/or partial conduction of practical case studies.

This module will also enable students to identify and address methodological and practical issues that may be encountered in conducting qualitative and/or quantitative research; and to reflect on and address the ethical and political implications pertaining to the collection, analysis and dissemination of research data.
