Instruction content/structure
  • Introduction
  • Framework conditions and solution strategies
  • Traffic measurement and statistical data preparation
  • Description of traffic flow on road sections (kinematics and dynamics ot he individual vehicle, distribution of characteristic values, state equation and fundamental diagram)
  • Regulations of the design and assessment of road traffic facilities
  • Assessments principles for sections and junctions without traffic lights (model and LOS determination, procedure adaption and capacity limits)
  • Parking Facilities: Parking Space in Urban Areas (basics and procedure); Parking Structures (check-in / check-out facilities and entire facility); Parking Guidance (basics, design procedure, control procedure, effects and trends)

Included: practical work

Qualification objectives

The student knows the fields of work of traffic engineering. They possess an understanding of traffic flow theory and can articulate various traffic flow states respective ot he fundemental diagram. Additionally, the student can proficiently conduct calculations related ot he kinematics and dynamics of individual vehicles, as well as analyze the distribution of characteristic values. He / she knows procedures of assessment and determining levels of service (LOS) of selected urban traffic facilities: unsignalized flow facilities and parking facilities.

The student is able to use these methods in practice and knows the basic theory behind these procedures. He / she knows the technology of traffic control on road sections and on road networks in urban areas. He/she can use the knowledge even in new situation, with which he/she is not familiar. This enables him/her, to manage projects autonomous and to work in research groups. He/she can communicate with experts and researchers but also with non-academics by team working on problem solutions.
